Wicker Travels to Afghanistan, Pakistan

WASHINGTON – U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., met with the leaders of Afghanistan and Pakistan as well as senior U.S. military officials during a congressional delegation trip to the region over the weekend.

The lawmakers spent Sunday at several remote U.S. and allied forward operating bases in Afghanistan, where they met with American and British military commanders.  The delegation also met with Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai in Kabul on Saturday.

On Friday, the group’s itinerary included meetings in Islamabad, Pakistan, with President Ali Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.

The delegation was led by Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.  Other members included Sens. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho., and Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska., as well as Rep. Mike Castle, R-Del.

Wicker is a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee and the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.

The lawmakers return to Washington today and will hold a press conference to discuss their trip Tuesday morning at the U.S. Capitol.  For more information on the press conference, or to obtain audio or video, please email jordan_stoick@wicker.senate.gov.
