Wicker Supports ‘U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Board of Visitors Enhancement Act’

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today announced his support for the “U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) Board of Visitors Enhancement Act,” S. 2076. The bill was introduced by Sen. John Boozman, R-Ark., on Tuesday.

“This legislation would bring the USMMA Board of Visitors in line with those at other service academies and strengthen the board’s effectiveness and governing capabilities,” said Wicker. “These reforms would equip the board to serve the best interests of USMMA students and alumni.”

The bill’s changes include:

• Increasing the number of members on the Board of Visitors from 10 to 18;

• Expanding the membership to include USMMA graduates;

• Implementing a new system to fill vacancies and appoint leadership;

• Specifying the duties and requirements of board members; and

• Requiring an annual visit to USMMA for the purpose of conducting the business of the Board of Visitors.

Located at Kings Point, New York, USMMA is one of five service academies in the United States. USMMA is charged with educating Merchant Marine officers to serve America’s marine transportation and defense needs in peace and war. The Academy is operated by the Maritime Administration, a modal administration of the U.S. Department of Transportation.
