Senator Wicker Receives U.S. Chamber’s Annual Spirit of Enterprise Award

March 27, 2009

WASHINGTON - The United States Chamber of Commerce yesterday recognized U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., for his continued efforts to support pro-economic growth policies and create jobs by awarding him with the Spirit of Enterprise Award.

“I am honored to receive this award from the Chamber of Commerce,” said Sen. Wicker, who has consistently earned the award in years past.  “During these tough economic times, it is now more important than ever to implement smart policies that will help small businesses in Mississippi and across the country create jobs and lift us out of this recession.”

Eligibility for the award is based on how members of Congress vote on key business and job creation issues, which the Chamber outlines in its yearly publication How They Voted.  Those members of Congress who support the Chamber’s position on at least 70 percent of those votes receive the Spirit of Enterprise Award.

According to the scorecard, Senator Wicker maintained an 88 percent rating with the Chamber this year and collectively holds a 95 percent ranking during his tenure in Congress.

“Last year in particular, Congress had to make some tough choices, and Senator Wicker clearly demonstrated his commitment to the economy and keeping America competitive in an ever-changing global market,” said Thomas J. Donohue, president and CEO of the U.S. Chamber.  “The Chamber is proud to present Senator Wicker with the Spirit of Enterprise Award on behalf of businesses large and small.”

The U.S. Chamber is the world’s largest business federation representing more than 3 million businesses of every size, sector, and region.

Sen. Wicker is serving his first term in the U.S. Senate.  He previously represented Mississippi’s First Congressional District for 13 years in the U.S. House of Representatives.
