Wicker Statement Commemorating Memorial Day

May 23, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) today issued the following statement ahead of Memorial Day, which will be observed on Monday, May 26:

“On Memorial Day, we honor and pay tribute to the brave men and women who have fought for our country and given their lives to protect and defend the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.  Mississippi has a strong tradition of supporting our military, with many of our family members, friends and neighbors having given their lives in the service of our country.  As we gather with friends and loved ones at picnics and other events on Memorial Day, it is important that we remember the true meaning of the holiday and the significance of the sacrifice given by so many.

“Memorial Day is also an opportunity to remember our military families who have lost a loved one and those who currently have family serving overseas.  Let us never forget the important sacrifice they have given and continue to give every day.”

Senator Wicker is an Air Force veteran and is a member of the Veterans Affairs Committee, the Armed Services Committee, and the Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
