Wicker Attends National Prayer Breakfast

Itawamba County Couple Joins Senator at Annual Breakfast

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., this morning attended the 56th annual National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, D.C.  Joining him were Dr. John Adams Jr., and his wife, Darla.  Dr. Adams is senior pastor of the First Baptist Church of Mantachie.  Mrs. Adams is the school nurse at Tupelo Middle School.

“Finding strength through prayer is something that millions of Americans share, regardless of their faith,” Wicker said.  “Today’s breakfast was a great reminder that despite the political and cultural differences so many of us have, our belief in God is one of the things that makes our country so special.”

Nearly 4,000 guests were in attendance to hear from a series of speakers, including President George W. Bush as well as the event’s featured speaker, Edward “Ward” Brehm, chairman of the United States African Development Foundation.

The purpose of the National Prayer Breakfast is to bring together leaders from across the country, as well as guests joining from many other parts of the country, in recognition of the belief in God and the power of prayer.  The annual breakfast dates back to the Eisenhower Administration and has been attended by every president since 1952.

The breakfast, which is staged each year without funding from the federal government, is hosted by the Fellowship Foundation, a national evangelical Christian group.
