Wicker: Intelligence Legislation will Protect America

July 9, 2008

WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today issued the following statement after the Senate approved legislation reauthorizing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) by a bipartisan vote of 69-28:

“Protecting the American people is the greatest responsibility our government has, and this legislation will help achieve that important goal.  This bipartisan compromise, which represents months of hard work and compromise, provides our intelligence community with the tools they need to keep our nation secure by effectively monitoring terrorist communication.  Just as importantly, this bipartisan measure respects Americans’ civil liberties while also protecting telecommunications companies from potentially crippling lawsuits resulting from their actions to help our country voluntarily following the September 11 attacks.”
