Miss. Senator Discusses Federal Disaster Declaration With New President

PHILADELPHIA – U.S. Sen. Roger Wicker, R-Miss., today met with President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence prior to the President’s remarks to a gathering of Republican members of Congress in Philadelphia.

Wicker and President Trump spoke about the recent tornado that devastated areas of the Pine Belt last week. The President indicated that he was pleased with the quick approval of a federal disaster declaration to aid Mississippi’s recovery efforts.

Senator Wicker is scheduled to visit the cities of Hattiesburg and Petal tomorrow to get a firsthand look at the damage and meet with local officials.

Earlier this week, Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker, as well as Representatives Bennie G. Thompson, Gregg Harper, Steven Palazzo, and Trent Kelly encouraged the President to approve the federal disaster assistance request submitted by Governor Phil Bryant on Monday.
